Yesterday my 4 year old daughter announced that she didn't like someone because they were ugly. After feeling flooded with feelings of shame, guilt and sheer terror (and did anyone here her).....I stepped back, shrugged off the immediate responsibility and began to process what this all really means.
Yes...I have heard of the "mathematical beauty equation"... they did a study to show that babies responded more positively to people who have better facial symmetry...you know the likes of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt types. There is no doubting that sometimes ‘beautiful looking' people get an easier ride (in the short term) however imagine my horror of this announcement when my whole growing business has arisen from the desire for women to understand and embrace the full essence of what beauty really is. To emanate beauty is to be truly beautiful, in my humble opinion. We all know the gorgeous looking girl who has the personality of a wasp.....how beautiful is that?
Anyway, in short.....I have realised that I should not stress or carry mother guilt about my daughter's fledgling opinions in life but to step up and demonstrate through my behaviour that kindness and beauty go hand in hand. I feel ‘pretty' confident I can do that......... I can teach her the Pretty vs Beautiful theory.
Take Care,
Julia
